Can Your Manager/Employee Relationships
Withstand the EFCA Challenge?
The EFCA Challenge
Business executives should be
concerned that so few Americans are even aware of the Employee Free Choice Act,
the most sweeping proposed labor law reform of this generation," said Bruce R.
Alper, ELA's Illinois representative and founding member. "This sort of
ignorance gives union organizers a distinct advantage. "Given President Obama's
promise to pass this legislation, most analysts predict it will become law.
It is important to:
-
Learn the facts. There are
many web site offering information. I particularly like the information on
the Labor Relations Institute site. Just click here:

-
Educate your employees now,
especially to the card check system as opposed to the secret ballot.
-
Implement an in-depth
management training program to build healthy manager/employee relationships.
Superior Relationships: The Differentiator
In-depth Managerial Training
Studies show that job
dissatisfaction, the desire to change companies or the need to unionize are all
related to the type of relationship between the employee and the immediate
manager/supervisor. If this is a healthy relationship, employees are not as
motivated to seek unionization.
This morning I walked around the
neighborhood for exercise and as I passed one house, the aroma of freshly cut
grass wafted through the air...a smell I remember from childhood days. Then the
distinct aroma of wild onions penetrated the air. I knew they were there among
the grass, but I couldn't see them.
I thought of the parallels to the
EFCA legislation pending in Congress. As company executives or business owners,
you are working hard to have a beautiful carpet of grass, or a healthy business
that can compete in the global marketplace. The scent of the onion is the hidden
conflicts and potential negatives of unionization.
If your grass is healthy with
strong roots, the wild onions have less change of spreading. The healthy roots
in your organization are strong manager/employee relationships.
The Leader Models Everything
Leaders may not recognize that
who they are as people affects virtually every aspect of their manager/employee
relationship. They are role models, modeling the way conflict is handled, how
respect is shown, and determining if integrity is intact at the end of every
day. Their behaviors are absorbed by those around them.
Do your leaders address conflict
immediately, look at the differing viewpoints, and resolve differences in a
professional manner? Are your leaders showing respect for employees by listening
to their needs, asking their opinions, and implementing their ideas when
appropriate? Do your leaders have unimpeachable integrity? If so, a standard is
set that others will feel drawn to follow.
The Superior Relationships: The
Differentiator management training program, helps build the leader described
above. Call 770-565-1504 today and ask for a complimentary consultation on this
training program.
